SULLIVAN MONUMENT
The Civil War Soldiers' Monument in the lovely town of Sullivan, N.H., is said to be the first such monument in the State erected with th use of public funds--capitalizing on a law passed by the N.H. legislature during the June Session,1867. The ladies of the town had done a "large proportion" of the necessry fundraising, too. The monument was erected and from an unidentified source we learn that, "At the dedication nearly all the people of Sullivan were present, besides a large number from adjoining towns. At 10 a.m. a procession was formed at the Town Hall and under the escort of the Unionville Brass Band of Swanzey, marched to the monument, where seats had been prepared.
After witnessing the raising of the main shaft, all marched around to view it, and then returned to their seats. After prayer was offered by Rev. John Wood, of Gilsum, a hymn was sung by the choir, followed by an address of about one hour by Rev. J. M. Stowe, of Sullivan.
The day was hot, and just at the close of the Rev. Stowe's tribute to the fallen soldiers, a shower dispersed the large audience to the church and Town Hall for shelter. The exercises were continued in the church, the address completed, and another hymn sung by the choir.
At the close of the exercises all were invited to the Town Hall for dinner. The day was one long to be remembered by Sullivan people."
THIS DEDICATION TOOK PLACE ON JULY 4, 1867 -- 135 YEARS AGO. At 10:00 a.m. on this July 4th, the Ladies of Aux.11 will be planting a geranium at this monument to commemorate those who served, those who made it possible, those who celebrated its raising, and all those who reside in Sullivan now!

OCT. 20, KEENE CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' MONUMENT
This statue in the Keene Common was dedicated in great ceremony on October 20, 1871, with over 7,000 in attendance. The featured speaker was Gen. Judson Kipatrick, with, then General James A. Garfield, also in attendance. He was in the area visiting his mother in nearby Richmond. Garfield would later become President of the United States.
The Ladies of Aux. 11 are looking for a few ideas for annual tribute beginning this Fall. What do you think?

~~PROMENADE~~
